Data Is The New Oil - 11.03.2021 Update
2020 emissions, Energy use in agriculture, Electric car models, Asian transport and Global rivers.
🏭 2020 emissions. The Global Carbon Project, a consortium of climate researchers, published daily CO2 emissions data for 2020. The Covid-19 pandemic led to a near 20% fall in global emissions at its peak in April. However, industrial and transport activity quickly rebounded as social distancing measures eased, and emissions were only down 7% on average for the year. The data is available in excel format by country and sector. A paper published in Nature magazine notes that similar, if slightly less radical, emission falls would be needed every year throughout the 2020s to meet the Paris climate agreement.
🚜 Energy use in agriculture. Statisticians Francesco Tubiello and Xueyao Pan released a database of fossil fuel use and CO2 emissions in the farming sector, using figures from the Food and Agriculture Organisation and the International Energy Agency. The dataset is available in csv format, spans the period 1970-2018 and covers more than 200 countries and regional entities.
🚗 Electric car models. Bartłomiej Hadasik and Jakub Kubiczek published a list of 53 fully-electric car models and their technical specifications (battery capacity, engine power, acceleration, mean energy consumption, vehicle size and weight). A similar database is available for electric scooters. Separately, Scott Hardman compiled different surveys of Californian drivers who chose to jettison their electric vehicle, and the reasons behind the decision.
🚊 Asian transport. The Asian Development Bank published a comprehensive transport database for 51 Asian countries. It covers more than 400 indicators in infrastructure, transport activity, road safety and air pollution. Several more datasets are in preparation, including on electric car models and production capacity, charging infrastructure and freight transport.
🌊 Global rivers. Researchers published a database of rivers for each major continent, including their key characteristics and location. This is in preparation for the 2022 Surface Water and Ocean Topography NASA satellite mission, which will vastly expand observations of river water surface elevation, width and slope.
